The band was at an interesting intersection when they made this album: their sound was feeling much more polished, yet they retained the powerful loud-soft idiosyncrasies of their indie background. Modest Mouse is an American rock band formed in 1993 in Issaquah, Washington, and currently based in Portland. This album is one of those where the last 4-6 songs are especially strong, and the two ending songs, "One Chance," and "The Good Times Are Killing Me" have become two of my favorite Modest Mouse songs, especially in the vocals and songwriting.Īll in all, when I first heard Good News, it was at a magic moment when I was hearing Modest Mouse for the first time, so I had no frame of reference for what their earlier work sounded like. The triptych of "Float On," "World at Large," and "Ocean Breathes Salty" were unescapable 2000s hits that represented an entirely new change in perception of rock's direction for me, and I nodded to them for years. Float On is a Rock song by Modest Mouse, released on April 5th 2004 in the album Good News For People Who Love Bad News. As time has gone by, I think I have finally realized that Good News is not the "best" Modest Mouse album per se, because Lonesome Crowded West and Moon & Antarctica are much more ruggedly honest creations, but Good News was without a doubt my entrance into the band at age 15, and perhaps the first time I consciously realized I was listening to "indie rock." ![]()
